John Toshack believes Liverpool are still suffering a hangover from their Premier League title collapse a year ago – and admits ‘things aren’t getting any better at the moment’.

The Reds, who were top of the table with the championship in their hands, held a 3-0 lead at Crystal Palace in their penultimate match of the 2013-14 season, only to see the Eagles claw back all three goals to secure a draw.

The result meant Manchester City swept to glory, and the memory has appeared hard to forget for Brendan Rodgers’ side, who slumped to sixth in the table last campaign.

The Northern Irishman has seen close allies Colin Pascoe and Mike Marsh leave Anfield this summer, following an end-of-season review, and former striker Toshack insists the situation is far from perfect on Merseyside.

“It’s very unusual that a coach stays on when his backroom staff have been sacked,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show. “There’s something not quite right there.

“Liverpool have gone three years without a trophy, I don’t remember that happening in my time. Liverpool have still got a hangover from those three goals they conceded against Crystal Palace [last season].

“Incidents like that can make or break a player or manager. I don’t see things getting any better at the moment for Liverpool.”
